Halloween 2020 is almost upon us, and kids everywhere in the UK are super excited to go out of the house for some fun time trick-or-treating after months of isolation. Adults are also looking forward to hosting fun Halloween parties with their close friends and family members while ensuring essential social distancing measures.

Unfortunately, it’s also the time when kids overindulge with the candy they collect and end up getting sick all over the house. This can be a nightmare for people with hardwood floors as they struggle to get rid of dried candy-vomit and sticky chewing gums.

Here are some clever tips and tricks to cleaning different types of mess from your floors without damaging them:

It comes as no surprise to any parent as their kid ends up puking all over their carpeted floors after eating too much candy. The first step to cleaning up the mess is by scarping off excess vomit with paper towels and old rags. The next step is sprinkling a little baking soda or corn-starch on the leftover mess to allow the chemicals to absorb as much puke as possible to reduce the chance of a stain. Finally, use a mixture of liquid detergent and vinegar to scrub the area and wipe it off with warm water.

If you have wooden flooring, avoid sprinkling baking powder as it can cause the wood to become dull and faded. Simply wipe away the vomit using a mild cleaning agent and some antibacterial wipes.

Chewing Gum

A lot of parents freak out when they see a piece of gum stuck on their precious hardwood or carpeted floors. Instead of panicking, simply freeze the gum by rubbing it with a cube of ice, and you will be able to lift it off easily in one piece. Sometimes, some pieces of the gum stay stuck on shaggy carpets. You can remove that by using a steel-toothed comb on the area and scraping off the excess gum.

Rotten Pumpkins

Leaving those cute little jack-o’-lanterns out for too long will cause them to rot and decompose. Rotting pumpkins often leave behind unsightly stains on the wooden floor. You can remove those by dampening a microfibre cloth with a little warm water and adding a squirt of toothpaste to it. Rub the stained area with the toothpaste and cloth gently until the stain is gone. Reapply wood polish to restore the shine of your gorgeous hardwood floors!
